Top 11 Best and Worst movies of the year!

Aha. So, you've decided to cut to the chase and peek at what we think. Well, here it is: Red & May's criticism of the best movies of the year.

This saying is, of course, not quite true in several aspects. First, the term "best" does not mean what you think it means. We've rated the 11 top movies of the year, that's for sure; but some of these movies are not "good" in the usual sense. We've long ago discovered that watching a bad movie, a really bad movie, can be equally or even more fun then watching a good one. so we've put here the movies that we think proved themselves either spectacularly good or astonishingly bad, which is often the same thing.

Second, there's "Criticism" - you'll find very little of that here. Well, we try to talk about the movie, but we usually end up talking about very different stuff, and we don't have a hell of a lot to say about the movies anyway. The movie was good, what else do you need to say? That it was affected by Hitchcock or whatever? Expressionist Camera angles? Me and May won't recognize an expressionist camera angle if it bit us in the face, and lobotomizing movies tend to take all the fun out of them. So as a movie critics team, we're one of the worst there is. But that's fine. You didn't come all this way to hear criticism.

Third, the term "year" is not entirely accurate here. All the movies here are ones we watched during 1996; however, some of them came out to the screens in the US as early as 1995, and some in 1997. This is because american movies usually take between several weeks and several months to get to European countries; in bad cases, you can rent the video in the US while the movie is still showing here. Other movies, usually the ones labelled "foreign" get here before they're shown in the US. Tough. that's how it is.

And now that we're behind all that, here are the best and worst:

1. Showgirls
2. Breaking The Waves
3. Bound
4. Barb Wire
5. Trainspotting
6. Crash
7. Striptease
8. Sense & Sensibility
9. Strange Days
10. The Pillow Book
11. Now And Then

And the one that didn't get in the list -

0. Independence Day
